FAMILY LOSES FIGHT TO SAVE FOUNDLING DEER

THE HAMILTONS OF BUFFALO FORGE grew attached to a fawn they named Lucky and tried to treat the animal's injuries.

A fawn rescued from beneath a pile of rocks during the flood last week in Rockbridge County died Sunday morning.

Kaye Hamilton, whose husband, Clyde, was involved in the rescue, said the little buck died during the night from apparent internal injuries.

The fawn, named Lucky by the Hamiltons, seemed to be getting better after Clyde Hamilton and Buck Wilkerson pulled him out from under rocks near a crumpled bridge on U.S. 501 June 29.

``His nose was cold,'' Kaye Hamilton said. ``He was walking around.''

Lucky's eye was swollen shut from cuts after swift floodwater partially buried him in the rocks. He was also limping from a cut on his front leg, she said.

Clyde Hamilton carried the fawn in his arms several miles before reaching his truck near Glasgow. He wrapped the fawn in his coat and took him home to Buffalo Forge to try to revive him.

Kaye Hamilton said the couple tried to find the fawn a home at the Natural Bridge Zoo, but were unable to place him there. They also had contacted an animal shelter in Verona, but they were told that the shelter could not take the fawn until after the weekend.

They kept the fawn in a room off their wood yard and treated his wounds with an antibiotic to combat infection. They fed the animal calf's milk in a futile attempt to keep him alive.

``We had become attached to Lucky,'' she said. ``We buried him in the back yard and made him a cross.''
