If approved by the Newport News City Council, the bus would serve neighborhoods where residents have trouble getting to police headquarters or one of the three substations, Corvello said.
The chief said the converted bus might be parked in neighborhoods for 30 or 60 days at a time. It could be used for routine police operations and as a possible juvenile detention center to hold curfew violators, he said.
He hopes to have the portable station in service by January.
