SOFTWARE MERGERS GAIN MOMENTUM

Symantec Corp. said Thursday it would acquire Delrina Corp., best known for its Winfax software, in a stock swap valued at $415 million. The deal would add Delrina's communications programs to the utilities produced by Symantec.

The acquisition is the latest in a wave of software industry mergers. The consolidation is expected to increase as the Aug. 24 shipping date of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 95 approaches. Windows 95 will incorporate many functions previously filled by separate programs.

Symantec's main product, Norton Utilities, lets users back up files, protect data and prevent damage from viruses; Delrina's specialty is software for sending faxes.
