STANLEY WINS JUNIOR CROWN IN GOLF EVENT

One great round was good enough for Marty Stanley in the Andrew Haley Memorial Junior golf tournament.

Stanley, of Martinsville, slipped to a second-round 77 - 11 strokes higher than his tournament-record 66 on Thursday - but still captured the featured 16-17 age division by five shots over defending champion Nick Varney of Roanoke and Neil Norris of Martinsville.

Stanley, 17, finished with a total of 1-over-par 143 for two trips around Martinsville's Lynwood Golf Club course.

Varney, who shot 141 to win last year, had a second-round 73 for 148. Norris shot a second-round 75. Varney won the second-place trophy in a playoff with Norris, birdieing the first hole.

Daniel Claybrook of Stoneville, N.C., was fourth at 150, while Troutville's Mark Sweeney and Midlothian's Joe Privitera tied for fifth at 151. Roanoke's Jason Orlando and Brian Agee tied for seventh at 152.

Chris Clark of Martinsville followed his first-round 70 with a 74 Friday to win the 14-15 division by four shots. Michael Loftin of Stoneville was second at 148, while Roanoker Trey Clower was third at 150.

Ryan Stinnett of Amherst, tied with Glade Hill's Matt Chandler after a first-round 72, fired a final-round 70 to win the 12-13 division. Chandler finished second at 145, while Pearisburg's Russ Johnston, thanks to a final-round 72, took third at 153.

Joannah Pattison of Wythevile captured the four-player girls' division. Pattison had a 78 Friday for a total of 161, seven shots better than runner-up Julie Russun of Crumpton, Md.

In other sports in the region:

Jimmy Williams, teaching professional at Cox's Golf Range, fired a 2-under 70 to finish fifth in the Por Sweeps division of the Middle Atlantic PGA Pro-Junior on Friday at Lakeview Country Club in Harrisonburg.

Williams' team of Wes Martin, Michael Davis and Will Clayton shot 7-under to take third in the team gross division.

Martin's 74 enabled him to finish second in the boys' 16-17 age group and qualify for the MAPGA Junior Championship to be held Aug. 3 in Alexandria.

The popular Legends Cars return for their third appearance of the season tonight at New River Valley Speedway as part of the Dooley Printing/Skoal Racing 200 schedule.

The Legends share the spotlight with the Late Model Stock Car drivers, who will compete in twin 50-lap events that count for points in the Mid-Atlantic Region title chase as well as track points.

Also on the card are 35-laps for the Limited Sportsman and 25 laps each for the Mini and Pure Stock divisions.
