THOMAS, DODGE SWEEP AT NRVS

It was four Chevys chasing a Dodge in the second of the 50-lap Late Model races in the Dooley Printing/Skoal Racing 200 late Saturday night at New River Valley Speedway.

The Dodge belonged to Ronnie Thomas of Christiansburg. He started from the pole and led every lap to win his seventh race of the season and 55th of his career at the track.

"It was dominant tonight," Thomas said of his small-carburetor Dodge that he drove to victory in both ends of the Late model doubleheader. "The last few weeks, everything has gone right.''

Like the first race, Philip Morris of Ruckersville was the runner-up to Thomas. But unlike the first race, Morris had to fight to maintain second instead of battling for the lead.

Morris, in his Camaro, held off the Monte Carlo of Floyd's Jeff Agnew for second. The McGuire brothers of Roanoke finished fourth and fifth in a pair of Camaros as Tim was fourth and Tony fifth.

Tony, on the strength of his sixth- and fifth-place finishes in the twin 50-lappers, took over first place in the track's LMS point standings from Michael Ritch. The High Point, N.C., driver started on the outside pole for both races but finished 14th and 15th due to handling problems.

nBobby Decola of Burnsville, N.C., inherited the lead when David Jude and Timothy Peters spun in turn 4 and went on to win the 25-lap Legends race. Lamont Brown of Forest was second and Tam Tophan of Wytheville, who has driven Late Model and Limited this season, was third.

Jude, of Kermit, W.Va., and Peters, the 14-year-old rookie from Providence, N.C., were able to continue after their incident on lap 18. On the restart, the drivers tangled again in turn 4. This time neither driver could continue. Jude was put in the pits for the night for causing the accident.

Peters hit the wall hard as he spun. He was briefly knocked out by the impact of the crash. After he regained consciousness, Peters was taken to Radford Community Hospital for treatment and released.

The on-track confrontation briefly spilled over into a fight between team members and fans in the pits.

Bruce Brown of Rocky Mount, N.C., grabbed the lead on the first lap and went on to win his third 35-lap Limited Sportsman race of the season. Eddie Walls of Hillsville was second, Terry Lawson of Christiansburg third and Bo Howell of Christiansburg fourth.

Wayne Moore of Radford took the lead on the first lap and went on to win his fifth 25-lap Mini Stock race of the season. Ray Sowers of Floyd was second and Kevin Kenley of Radford third.
