TWO RAPES LINKED TO TINTED VANS

Within the last month, two women have reported in separate incidents that a man driving a van offered them a ride in Southwest Roanoke, then raped them. The most recent sexual assault occurred early Monday.

In both incidents, the van was described as a burgundy-colored vehicle with tinted windows.

A 31-year-old woman told police she was walking in the 500 block of Salem Avenue Southwest about 3:30 a.m. Monday when a man driving a van asked if she needed a ride. The woman accepted.

The man drove to the 1900 block of Rorer Avenue, where he pulled into an alley and raped the woman, according to police. The man then pulled the woman from the van by her hair and beat her, ramming her head into a building, kicking and punching her. The man then drove off.

The woman walked to the Roanoke Police Department to report the incident and was treated at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley.

Between 3:30 and 4:30 a.m. on June 18, police found a 31-year-old woman on the 2400 block of Patterson Avenue Southwest naked and crying. Police said the woman told them she was walking along the 1700 or 1800 block of Patterson Avenue Southwest when a man asked if she needed a ride. She accepted. When he asked her to go with him to a motel, she refused.

The man drove to the 2400 block of Patterson, where he parked between two vehicles. Police said the man held the woman by her throat, threatened to kill her and raped her. He forced her from the van and raped her again outside the van. The man fled the area in his van.

The woman was treated at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley.
