Everything happened so quickly that at first, authorities were unable to find the victim, who was shot outside his home. Bobby Casey, 32, of the 100 block of 17th Street Southwest, was taken to Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley in a private vehicle. He was treated for a gunshot wound to the stomach and was talking with police soon after the incident.
No one at the hospital was able to give an update on his condition Monday night.
The gunfire started about 2:30 p.m., attracting a crowd at the Hurt Park housing development.
``I heard five consecutive pops,'' said one witness, who declined to give his name. ``It scared me so hard I couldn't move. Three guys ran past me. One of them had a silver pistol.''
As police arrived, they saw two men running away. Witnesses told them that six to eight shots had been fired into the crowd.
Police said Casey later told them that several men he knew drove into his apartment complex and motioned for him to come closer. Casey told police his brother had an ongoing dispute with the men.
As Casey approached the men, one of them opened fire, hitting him in the abdomen. The shooter fled.
Afterward, residents huddled in tight groups, watching plainclothes detectives and uniformed officers search along a hillside where the shooting occurred.
Police arrested the two men they had seen running away, then released them after detectives learned they were only witnesses to the shooting.
