SCHOOL BOARD KEEPS CHAIRMAN

Jack Newbill was reappointed chairman of the Franklin County School Board at its annual reorganizational meeting Tuesday.

Guy Buford was reappointed vice-chairman.

It was the board's final reorganization under the county's current system for selecting board members. An appointment committee authorized by the Board of Supervisors is being eliminated in favor of School Board elections.

Seven of the eight incumbents are campaigning for election in November. Herman Craig, who represents the Snow Creek District, is the only member who is not.

In another item from Tuesday's meeting, the board agreed to authorize payroll deductions for employees who join the county's new YMCA program.

And, Betty Blair, the division's public relations coordinator, announced that volunteers put in a total of 32,614 hours with the school system in 1994-95, down from 35,262 in 1993-94.

Blair said 4,466 students participated in the county's Student Recognition with Industry program in 1994-95, a 1,700 jump from 1993-94.
