YOUNG, FISHER PACE FIELD AT BOBBY BOWERS

Justin Young of Roanoke and Lee Fisher of Bedford both shot 73s Monday to pace Southwest Virginians competing in the 16-17 age division at the Bobby Bowers Memorial Junior golf tournament at Springfield Golf and Country Club.

Young is seeded No.4 and Fisher No.7 in the 64-player 16-17 match-play field. Match play beings today.

Adam Dodson of Dunkirk, Md., captured the 16-17 qualifying medal with a 71.

Eight of the 10 Southwest Virginia entries finished in the low 64 of qualifying, earning a spot in match play. Others advancing included Jacob Jarrett (74), Brian Whitaker (74), Marty Stanley (77), Jason Orlando (80), Chris Boswell (80) and Joshua Mattox (80).

Brandon LaCroix fired a 73 to capture medalist honors for the 14-15 age division and qualify for match play.

Finn Pincus, the track and field and cross-country coach at Roanoke College, finished sixth out of 100 runners in the Ohio-Michigan marathon in Toledo on Sunday.

Pincus, 39, ran the 26.2 miles in 2 hours, 58 minutes, which qualified him for the Boston Marathon in April of 1996.

The Cave Spring American League baseball all-stars will meet District 5 champion Richmond on Saturday in Little League state tournament play.

Cave Spring captured the District 12 title Saturday with a 4-3 victory over Clifton Forge. If it wins this Saturday at 10 a.m., Cave Spring would play at 6 p.m. against either Lynchburg or Troy.

Adam Toulon was named head gymnastics coach at Radford University, succeeding Martin Huckabee.

Toulon, 25, served as an assistant at William & Mary and Western Michigan University.
