THE LIST OF SUMMERTIME ACTIVITIES IS A LONG ONE

Get out your calendars and a pencil. There have been a lot of events in the New River Valley recently, and the activities are continuing through the summer.

SWIMMING ALONG: The Blacksburg Sunfish amassed a season-high 1,164 points as they scored more than Forest Hills (519) and Radford (504) combined to win a tri-meet.

Nine swimmers won both their breaststroke and freestyle events.

The Gold Division double-winners were YVONNE NG in the girls' 7-8 age group, PAUL MOORE in the boys' 7-8 age group, ASHLEY CAVELL in the girls 9-10 age group; TOMMY EVANS in the boys' 9-10 age group, EUNICE KIM in the girls' 11-12 age group, JAMES WOLFLE in the men's 25-39 age group and GEOFF SAUNDERS in men's 40-and-older group.

Those winners aged nine and older won the 100-meter freestyle and the 50-meter breaststroke. The 7- and 8-year-old swimmers won the 50-meter freestyle and the 25-meter breaststroke events.

Also winning twice were KATHY TERLESKY in Silver Division women's 25-39 group and PATRICK DONAHOE in Bronze Division men's 40-and-older group.

SULTANS OF SWAT: Adams Home Builder slugger JOHN AKERS did something no one else had done in a Pulaski Men's League Softball game this season. The former Pulaski County High baseball standout went deep four times.

Akers' four-home-run game helped Adams turn back Bad Company 21-14. And for good measure, Akers was the winning pitcher.

Meanwhile, Hudson's (18-0) and Golden Corral (17-0) continued their unbeaten ways. However, both had to win close games to stay perfect.

Hudson's rallied for four runs in the seventh inning as it edged Budweiser 13-10. Winning pitcher KEITH TURMAN knocked home the winning run.

Golden Corral got seventh-inning homers from CHRIS TICKLE, JEFF REYNOLDS and BOBBY EASTER to down True Value Hardware 24-20.

Because of scheduling and rainouts, the league leaders won't meet until the end of the season to decide matters.

Both have sluggers of their own as well. MATT DEAN has 25 homers for Hudson's. B.W. HILL of Golden Corral leads the league with 29 round-trippers and is on a pace to break the single-season home run record.

MORE SOFTBALL: Radford's Veterans Field will be the site of a men's slowpitch tournament this weekend. As part of the tournament, there will be a home-run hitting contest.

The cost is $85 per team. The entry deadline is 6 p.m. Thursday.

For information, call CECIL PHILLIPS JR. at 639-0277.

TENNIS TIME: The big winners at the Pulaski Firecracker Doubles Tournament were BOBBY COMBS and TIM NESTER.

First the duo scored a tournament-high 23 points in the round-robin portion of the eight-team event. Then they beat A.J. ACHARYA and JACK KNARR 6-4 in the finals.

Also qualifying for the championship were the teams of PRIYA ACHARYA-DOUG FREEMAN and DAVID CONNER-PHILLIP BOYD.

In the first flight, CHAD KING and JOHN FREEMAN downed MIKE and MIKIE TURNER 7-5 in the finals.

MORE TENNIS: The Pulaski County Tennis Patrons are planning a benefit tournament Aug. 12-13.

The entry fee is $25 with all proceeds targeted for youth and adult tennis in Pulaski County.

Competitors will be given bonus points in the round-robin portion of the tournament by collecting pledges.

For information about the tournament or the patrons, call JOHN FREEMAN at 674-2940.

GRIDDERS GET READY: Christiansburg and Montgomery County are taking registration for fall football for youth ages 9-13 (as of Nov. 1).

In Montgomery County, registration runs through Aug. 18. The cost is $15.

There will be teams at Auburn High in Riner and at Shawsville High. Registration forms are available at the high schools and the recreation department.

For information, call 382-6978.

In Christiansburg, registration runs through Aug. 8. The cost is $20 for town residents and $25 for nonresidents.

Players will be divided into lightweight and heavyweight teams, depending upon age and weight. All 9-, 10- and 11-year-olds weighing less than 85 pounds play lightweight. Those 10- and 11- year-olds weighing between 85 and 90 pounds can play in either league. Players ages 12 and 13 will play heavyweight.

CAMP NEWS: Learn to cheer - as well as the chants, dances, stunts and jumps of cheerleading - at a camp co-sponsored by Christiansburg Parks and Recreation and Christiansburg High cheerleading.

The camp will be Aug. 14-15 at the Christiansburg National Guard Armory. The cost is $25 and includes a T-shirt for those who register by July 21. The deadline is Aug. 4.

Radford University Individual Basketball Camp runs Sunday through July 20.

The camp is open to boys ages 8-18 and is conducted by Radford men's coach RON BRADLEY.
