Pageant director Dotty Talbott reports that of the seven contestants who have signed up so far, none is from the New River Valley, although she has three or four possibilities.
The $250 entry fee includes lodging, meals and incidentals.
Talbott said she's hoping to have 15 contestants for the pageant, which, she likes to emphasize, "is not a beauty contest" but a chance for seniors to "share their talent, poise and vitality." and have fun.
Lowell Hill will be the master of ceremonies. Bob Thomas of Radford is the pageant's producer-director.
Eligible seniors must be at least 55. Talbott has more details at 674-5534.
"To agree to disagree without being disagreeable" is one of the goals of the Blacksburg News and Views Discussion Group for seniors. The group, which alternates Thursdays with the Senior Discussion Group, has scheduled a series of sessions dealing with the public schools.
The first is Thursday, when Regina Smith and Mary Biggs present "The Impact of Governing Bodies on our Classrooms." Smith is president of the Montgomery County Council Parent-Teacher Association; Biggs, a Virginia Tech graduate and second-grade teacher, is also the Democratic Party candidate for the District F seat on the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors.
Later gatherings will examine the Focus 2006 goals and look at current and future issues in county schools.
Meanwhile, the Senior Discussion Group continues its series on the welfare system. Thursday, July 20, the question is: "If you were running the welfare system today, how would you do it?"
Both discussion groups meet at the Blacksburg Community Center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive. Sessions start at 9:30 a.m. with conversation and coffee. Programs begin at 10 a.m.
Joy Herbert has more information at 961-1134.
