May could rebid for Woodward/Lothrop

WASHINGTON - May Department Stores Co. reportedly is trying to put together a competing bid for Woodward & Lothrop Inc., hoping to top an offer from Federated Department Stores.

The Washington Post reported Tuesday that May, St. Louis-based parent of the Hecht's chain, is negotiating with union officials, hoping to cut a deal that would provide employment and benefits to workers if May were to buy Woodward & Lothrop.

But Thomas McNutt, president of Local 400 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, said no deal has been made yet.

Last month, Woodward rejected a joint offer by May and J.C. Penney Co. in favor of a bid from Cincinnati-based Federated for 11 stores.

Lawyer buys former eatery for office

Roanoke lawyer Lance Hale has purchased the building that formerly housed the Junior Lunch restaurant and, combined with an adjacent storefront, plans to move his law offices there.

The building, at 117-119 Franklin Road S.W., contains about 4,500 square feet on a single floor.

Hale will move his office from the Shenandoah Building. He said he bought the building because he needs more space and he wanted a ground-floor location. In addition, he said, "I'm a litigator," and the site is near federal court, state courts and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

Although he is in solo practice now, Hale said he is seeking an associate and probably will hire still another lawyer after he moves.

Terms of the purchase were not disclosed. The deal closed June 27.

Hale has retained the architectural firm of Hughes and Associates of Roanoke to prepare plans for renovation of the building. One of the questions the architects are studying is the possibility of adding a second floor to the structure for either office or residential purposes.

Hale is negotiating with potential contractors for remodeling. His target date for moving is December.
