Crop reports due Monday

CHRISTIANSBURG - Farmers have until Monday to report their planted crop acres to the Consolidated Farm Service Agency office.

The report of crops planted for 1995 keeps farm-grain bases updated, keeps crop insurance in force for those who purchased it and helps insure eligibility for price support.

Once they file their report, farmers also can start their eligibility process for the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program. This program applies to crops that are not available under the federal crop insurance and will provide protection against crop losses at a level similar to the protection provided by the catastrophic crop insurance coverage. This program replaces federal disaster relief assistance, which no longer is available. Farmers will not be eligible for the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program if they do not report their acreage.

Recently, the Federal Crop Insurance Co. of the U.S. Department of Agriculture undertook a detail study to determine the eligibility of Christmas trees for possible inclusion in the Federal Crop Insurance Program. The Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program includes Christmas trees.

The CFSA office in Montgomery County is in Christiansburg on North Franklin Street. The Giles County office is in Pearisburg on Wenonah Avenue. For more information, call the Montgomery County office at 382-3961 or the Giles office at 921-3051.

Jack tales at libraries

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Ferrum Jack Tale Players will be at branch libraries of the Montgomery County-Floyd Regional Library on July 24-25. The players will dramatize folklore of the Blue Ridge Mountains with their presentation of the Jack Tales. The stories are entertaining and educational and encompass traditional stories and music of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The players are students at Ferrum College. The stories are collected, written and directed by Rex Stephenson of Ferrum College. The Jack Tale Players were organized in 1975 and have performed in 34 states and in England.

The program is free and will last approximately 45 minutes. Seating is limited and will be on a first-come, first-seated basis. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. For more information, call 382-6970.
