Judge sends serious DUI message

LEESBURG - A Loudoun County judge said he wanted to send a message about the consequences of drunken driving with a 21-year sentence Wednesday for a man who killed a father of two.

Robert Creel pleaded guilty to involuntary aggravated manslaughter and driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Under his plea, he will never hold a driver's license again.

Denny Devenger died when Creel's car crossed the center line on a rural road last August. The Devenger family was returning home to Vienna from a picnic.

Warner to assist Liddy's daughter

MOUNT VERNON - Sen. John Warner, R-Va., has been a target of conservative talk show host G. Gordon Liddy for refusing to back controversial candidates in his own party.

But Warner is supporting at least one controversial figure in the upcoming General Assembly elections - Liddy's daughter Sandra.

Warner will give a fund-raising reception today for Sandra Liddy Bourne, his office said. The reception will be at the home of a Mount Vernon Republican activist.

``I am overwhelmed at the broad base of my support from the unified Republican Party, as well as the strong support I am receiving from independents and Democrats,'' Bourne said.

Bourne is trying to unseat Del. Linda ``Toddy'' Puller, a prominent Democrat and widow of Lewis Puller Jr., a Pulitzer Prize-winning author.

Man sentenced for assaulting child

ROCKVILLE, Md. - A man convicted of abducting and sexually assaulting a Fairfax County, Va., boy was given two life sentences plus 30 years in jail on Wednesday.

Edward Wingo, 25, of Damascus, Md., was convicted earlier of taking a 6-year-old boy from his home in Virginia on Nov. 3, bringing him to Damascus and sexually abusing him. The boy, missing some of his clothing, was found on a jogging path in Montgomery County.

Floodwaters scrap historic bridge

RAPIDAN - Flooding has twisted the 90-year-old Willis Bridge so severely that the historic structure linking Culpeper and Orange counties will be scrapped.

``There's just nothing we could salvage,'' said Bob Connock Jr., construction engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation's Culpeper District. ``It's too damaged.''

The historic steel truss bridge that carries Virginia 689 over the Rapidan River was closed to traffic after a truck damaged it in January. Floodwaters swept the bridge off its columns and into the riverbed June 27.

The 193-foot span was the largest of at least five bridges wiped out in the nine-county Culpeper District, which includes Culpeper, Greene, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties.
