IN SCHOOL

THE ALLIANCE FOR EXCELLENCE, a non-profit partnership of community colleges and the black community, recently recognized several black students for their academic achievements during its ninth annual Academic Excellence Awards Program.

Six memorial plaques were awarded to Virginia Western students. The recipients were: Samuel M. Pope, Robin M. Kyle, Patricia Willis, Faith M. Bailey, Carols D. Williams, Marlene F. Starkey. The plaques were given in memory of Janet Idette Gravely, William C. Prunty, Ishan Rachais Brooks Washington, the Rev. Raymond R. Wilkinson, James Leroy Williams, Thelma Catherine Gunn Williams.

Certificates were given to several Virginia Western students in recognition of academic excellence and contribution to student life. The recipients were: Rhonda A. Andrews, Daphne A. Boyd, Ina M. Brown, Angela N. Burnette, Shannon L. Christian, Najela T. Comfort, Walter L. Davis, Sydney D. Divers, Jean A. Dixon, Jacueline Y. English, Malinda G. Farmer, Todd L. Flood, Emma T. Gibson, Harold Hancock Jr., Myles W. Jackson Sr., Brenda L. Jones, Prestonia B. Kier, Kim M. Lewis, Samuel L. Manning Jr., Tammie L. Mattox, Barbara B. McCadden, Sharon K. Merchant, Alfred J. Nelms, Stephen C. Penn, LeSonya S. Preston, Devon L. Richardson, Nijyah S. Sabree, Andre G. Saunders, Lori D. Simmons, Steven B. Stanley, Makesha D. Thomasson, Wilma D. Vaughn, Sean J. Vincent, Talmadge A. Vineyard, David B. Watts, Sonja R. Whorley, Darlene Williams, Christian D. Williams, and Maurice M. Wilson.

Junior and senior high school students with a 3.0 grade point average or higher also received a certificate and the senior from each school with the highest grade point average received a plaque. High school seniors receiving plaques were: Tiffany Gregory, Cave Spring; Raven Terrell Lawton, Franklin County; Barry Williams, Lord Botetourt; TeEasha Skinner, North Cross; Michael Dowe II, Northside; Scharles Cercy Petty, Patrick Henry; Regina Sims, Salem High; and April Johnson, William Fleming.

High school seniors receiving certificates were: Orenthal J. Beane, Cave Spring; Jennifer Elena Gates, Latishia Gwenn Harper, Kimberly Davia Jamison, Sabrina Lynn Mattox, Cheryl Lynn Robertson, Jessica Olivia Thomas, Krysta Lynelle Turner, Latonya Monique Witcher all of Franklin County High; Lee King, Amy Sullivan both of Lord Botetourt; Candance Grogans, Shataqua Hayes, Leland Keeling, Felicia Monroe, Paul Stockton Jr. all of Northside; Nia Malene Foderingham, Rasheedah Denise Hamidullah, Love Fernette Pate all of Patrick Henry; Roderick I.
