SEAMAN RECRUIT LESTER T. BISHOP, son of Larry E. and Laura T. Bishop of Buchanan, has completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

He is a 1993 graduate of James River High School.

COAST GUARD PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS JOSEPH E. VIA, son of Charles J. and Marsha L. Via of New Castle, was recently promoted to his present rank and reported for duty aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Vigorous, stationed in Cape May, N.J.

ANGELA F. RITTER, daughter of Sarah Cline of Roanoke and Ted R. Cline of Goodview, has been promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of staff sergeant. She is a 1984 graduate of William Fleming High School.

MARINE LANCE CPL. JOHN M. MOREFIELD, son of James E. Morefield of Fincastle, recently received a Meritorious Mast. He was given the award for superior individual performance and outstanding service while assigned with Marine Wing Support Squadron 274, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, N.C. Morefield is a 1992 graduate of Pulaski County High School.

SEAMAN RECRUIT NAIMA A. SCOTT, daughter of the Rev. Edward A. Scott of Roanoke, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. She is a 1994 graduate of William Fleming High School.

PVT. SABRINA L. HAMBRICK, daughter of Mary E. and Michael L. Lee Sr. of Buchanan, recently completed training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. She is a 1993 graduate of James River High School.

PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS SHANNON L. MANNS, son of Charles G. Manns and Barbara Keeling, both of Roanoke, has reported for duty aboard the USS Fort McHenry, based in San Diego.

Manns, a 1991 graduate of William Fleming High School, joined the Navy in March 1992.

ARMY PVT. NICOLE C. JORIES, daughter of Edith L. Tinsley of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Fort Leonard E. Wood, Waynesville, Mo.

Jories is a 1993 graduate of William Fleming High School.

ARMY RESERVE CADET RAYMOND P. KACZMAREK, son of Jerome S. and Amelia A. Kaczmarek of Roanoke, recently earned several awards at the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets annual award ceremony in Blacksburg.

He received the American Defense Preparedness Association Award, the American Legion ROTC Military Excellence Award, the Daughters of the American Revolution Award and the Gen. Douglas MacArthur Award.

The awards recognize exemplary duty performance, job knowledge, leadership qualities and significant self-improvement.

He is a 1991 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS MICHAEL A. MILLER and NAVY AIRMAN APPRENTICE DWIGHT J. HILLARD recently participated in a commemoration of the end of World War II aboard the aircraft carrier USS America. Miller is the son of Johnny R. and Ruth A. Miller of Roanoke. Hillard is the son of Dwight A. and Dot Hillard of Troutville. Miller graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1991; Hillard is a 1990 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

THREE NAVY OFFICERS have recently completed a six-month overseas deployment aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation: Petty Officer 1st Class John D. Mays, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Watts of Buchanan; Chief Petty Officer Walter T. Powell, son of Walter T. Powell Jr. of Roanoke; and Airman Recruit Joseph E. Tucciarone, son of Joseph E. and LInda L. Tucciarone of Salem.

Mays is a 1976 graduate of James River High School; Powell graduated from Northside High School in 1980; and Tucciarone is a 1990 graduate of Salem High School.

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS DANIEL W. RING, son of George W. and Helen Ring of Bent Mountain, recently completed a six-month overseas deployment on the destroyer USS Peterson.

RANDY BROWN and EVAN RICHARDSON have been awarded Air Force ROTC college scholarships. The awards will cover the cost of full tuition, textbooks, laboratory and incidental fees.

Brown, a 1995 graduate of James River High School, is the son of Prentiss and Sandra Brown of Buchanan. Richardson, a 1995 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School, is the son of Alec and Melissa Richardson of Blue Ridge.

ARMY PVT. JOSEPH H. GORDON, son of Patricia A. Knighton of Ruckersville, has completed basic training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. He is a 1992 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

PFC. ROBERT S. GRAYBILL recently reported for duty with the 2nd Assault Amphibious Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Graybill, a 1994 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School, is the son of Robert H. Graybill of Roanoke and Cheryl H. Graybill of Blue Ridge.

BARRY L. SLEDD JR., son of Patricia B. Sledd and Barry L. Sledd Sr. of Roanoke, was recently promoted to the rank of sergeant in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. He is a 1989 graduate of William Fleming High School.

PVT. TONY L. WELLS of Martinsville recently completed training to earn the title marine. The training was conducted at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

ARMY CADET MALCOLM F. THOMPSON, son of Robert and Isa Thompson of Roanoke, was commissioned a second lieutenant after receiving a bachelor of science degree from U.S. Military Academy.

MARY L. McCLANAHAN, daughter of Joseph U. Thibodeaux of Salem and Joan C. Thibodeaux of Johnson City, Tenn., has been commissioned a second lieutenant after graduating from the Air National Guard Academy in Knoxville, Tenn.

ARMY PVT. JEFFREY L. TYREE, son of Roger and Mary Tyree of Forest, has completed basic training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.
