Jennifer Sorrel was a state winner in the fashion merchandising promotion place competition and won a $1,000 DECA/J.C. Penney Scholarship.
Loree Clarke, Stephanie Barnett and Paul Witt were state winners in the marketing research competition.
KRISTI LYNNE ALGER and MEENOO JAIN received outstanding awards for their achievement in science at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Ontario, Canada.
Alger, a senior at Patrick Henry High School and Roanoke Valley Governor's School, was awarded an $8,000 scholarship from the Office of Naval Reserve and U.S. Marine Corp for the most outstanding project in Environmental Science.
Jain, a senior at Cave Spring High School and Roanoke Valley Governor's School, received $100 cash for winning fourth place in the area of medicine and health.
ROBERT W. HERCHENRIDER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Herchenrider of Roanoke, has been awarded the Rensselaer Medal by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. The medal is awarded to high school juniors who are top students in science and mathematics.
Herchenrider is a junior at Cave Spring High School and the Roanoke Valley Governor's School for Science and Technology.
LESLIE STOCKTON, daughter of Jean Stockton of Roanoke and Paul Stockton of Houston, Texas, recently received George Mason University's Student Community Service of the Year Award for her devotion to the university community.
She was involved in many organizations, including Delta Sigma Theta, a public service sorority, and the Golden Key Honor Society. She was also a Mason Scholar, and served as vice president of the Black Student alliance. Stockton recently graduated from George Mason, and is a 1991 graduate of Northside High School.
MELINDA D. PERNA and SAMUEL J. PERNA III, daughter and son of Carolyn Dodd of Roanoke and Dr. Samuel Perna Jr. of Tuscaloosa, Ala., recently graduated from the University of Alabama.
Melinda graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. Samuel received a master of arts degree in rehabilitative counseling.
HEATHER AMMERMAN, daughter of Gifford and Eleanor Ammerman of Roanoke, graduated magna cum laude from Emory & Henry College.

ROANOKE SCHOOLS have announced the names of students who placed in the National Junior High Chess Championships in Dearborn, Mich.
The winners are: individual trophy, Jonathan Turner, Lucy Addison Aerospace Magnet Middle School, who placed 16th in the JV section; team trophy, James Madison Middle School, 16th in the JV section.

BRADY LEE of Roanoke has been selected to attend the International Summer School at the University of Oslo. She will study peace research, in cooperation with the International Peace Research Institute of Oslo.

KATHRYN FRANKE, daughter of Walter and Bernice Franke of Salem, recently received the Leadership Award from Lynchburg College for showing outstanding character and service to the college, community and fellow students.
Franke graduated from Salem High School in 1991 and is a senior communication studies major at the college.

GERALD McDERMOTT, assistant professor of religion at Roanoke College, has been awarded two grants to support his sabbatical research. He will be a member of the Center of Theological Inquiry at Princeton, N.J., which will provide housing and living expenses for him and his family. The center brings scholars from around the world to work on projects that relate theology to contemporary concerns. He has also been granted $800 by the Mednick Fellowships Committee of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges.
EVE-LYN ANNIKA COBEY, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Elwood Cobey, recently graduated cum laude from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. She received a bachelor of arts degree.
JONATHAN COOK, son of the Rev. Larry and Kris Lykens, has been named a United States National Collegiate Award winner in business education by the United States Achievement Academy. He is a student at Lee College in Cleveland, Tenn.
