Salem had the potential tying run on base in the eighth inning and the potential game-winner on in the ninth Saturday night, but could not score as the Avalanche lost its second consecutive Carolina League game, a 4-3 decision to the Prince William Cannons.
The Cannons (9-15) broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth against Salem starter Brent Crowther (1-2). Gus Polidor led off with a double to left field and Frank Menechino followed with a run-scoring single to center.
Salem (14-9) had the potential tying run at third with two out in the ninth inning, but Edgard Velasquez lined out to strand Pookie Jones. The Avalanche threatened again in the ninth when Brian Culp and Keith Grunewald, both of whom had walked off Cannons closer Archie Vasquez, were at second and third with two out. But Vasquez stopped the rally by striking out Nate Holdren to end the game.
Prince William took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on Paul Gonzalez's two-run single and an RBI groundout by Eric Richardson, but Salem countered with three in the third.
Chris Sexton's double with one out scored Holdren with Salem's first run. After Vincente Garcia singled to put runners at the corners, Velasquez followed with a sacrifice fly to score Sexton. Culp doubled in the final run of the inning to tie the score at 3.
Michael Call (4-7) picked up the victory in relief for Prince William. Vasquez recorded his 14th save.
