ANOTHER 1-RUN LOSS FOR SALEM ON ROAD

A SACRIFICE FLY in the bottom of the ninth gives Prince William a 5-4 Carolina League victory.

Will Polidor's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth gave Prince William a 5-4 Carolina League victory over Salem on Sunday, the Avalanche's third consecutive one-run loss.

The Cannons have won seven of their past eight meetings with Salem.

Salem had tied the score at 4 in the top of the fifth inning on Forry Wells' solo home run.

The Avalanche had an opportunity to take the lead in the seventh with the bases loaded and one out. But John Giudice lined into a double play, killing the threat.

In the ninth, Prince William's Juan Thomas led off with a single off Salem reliever Matt Aminoff, who had just entered the game. Paul Gonzalez followed with a sacrifice attempt, which Salem first baseman Nate Holdren fielded and threw to second. But Thomas beat the throw, putting runners at first and second with none out.

After a fielder's choice forced pinch-runner Eric Richardson at third and Sandy McKinnon walked, Polidor followed with his sacrifice fly. Giudice fielded it, and his throw was on target, but it bounced off catcher Will Scalzitti, allowing Gonzalez to score.

Prince William took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI groundout from Frank Menechino and an RBI double by Robert Machado.

The Cannons extended the lead to 4-0 in the second inning on a two-run single by McKinnon.

Salem rallied for three runs in the third on RBI triples by Chris Sexton and Keith Grunewald and an RBI single by Edgard Velasquez.
