EX-JOURNALIST DIES OF CANCER

Robert Moore, a longtime sportswriter for The Associated Press who once served as city editor of a newspaper in Pulaski, Va., died of cancer Sunday at his home. He was 79.

Moore ended his 34-year AP career in 1975 after five years as regional sports editor in Kansas City, Mo. He joined the wire service in 1942 in Richmond, Va., moved to Denver in 1956 and to New York in 1961.

``You served us with distinction in four bureaus,'' former AP president and general manager Wes Gallagher said upon Moore's retirement. ``You were considered a real bulwark in each location, a man known not only for his skill, but also for his hard work and uncomplaining nature.''

Moore, who was born in Beaver, Okla., joined the AP after working as a city editor at newspapers in Guymon and Idabel, Okla., and Pulaski. He also was a reporter at newspapers in Scottsbluff, Neb., and Canon City, Colo.

Moore attended Southwestern State College in Weatherford, Okla., and the University of Oklahoma.
