In addition to Ellertson, who breezed to a 7-and-6 victory over Natalie Easterly of Richmond in last year's final, other former winners participating include Jane Mack, Anne Patrick and Barbara Hughes, all of Richmond and all of whom hold multiple victories.
Mack's four titles came in 1977, '78, '82 and '92. Patrick won in 1983 and '93. Hughes' two victories were in 1965 and '67.
The contest is being played on The Homestead's 5,448-yard par-71 Cascades Course.
Following the 18-hole qualifying, the low 15 scores will join Ellertson on Tuesday in one-a-day matches leading to Friday's 18-hole championship clash.
At the nearby Homestead Course, 79 players - led by 1994 champion Audrey Najjum of Roanoke - will battle for the 38th Senior Women's Championship.
Najjum captured her fourth title in 1994. Her first was in 1978. Last year, she upset Chris Epperly of Virginia Beach by a 4-and-3 margin. Najjum's other two titles were in 1980 and '82.
Other former titlists in the seniors division are Ruth Verell of Alexandria, Joan Darden of Richmond, Marie Winks of Forest and Mary Jane King of Newport News. Verell's victories came in 1978 and '90. Darden won in 1989 and Winks in '88.
King also is a dual champion, with victories in 1985 and '86.
