CAROLINA DRIVER FINALLY TASTES VICTORY AT FCS

It took almost four years, but Lowe Smith finally won his second Late Model Stock Car race at Franklin County Speedway on Saturday.

The driver from North Carolina tangled with pole-sitter Bobby Radford on the first lap of the Rainbo Bread/Maaco Auto Body 300, taking out five cars. After the restart, Smith and Radford continued to battle before Smith moved in front and led the final 30 laps of the first 35-lap race of the evening.

It was his first Late Model victory since Sept.17, 1991. Radford held onto second, followed by Orville Reedy, Steve Lynch and Stuart Taylor.

The $2,000 bounty placed on Radford by track promoter Whitey Taylor was not in place because of cylinder problems to Radford's Chrysler. The drivers were informed of this before the race, Taylor said.

In the second 35-lapper, Stuart Taylor won, followed by Reedy, Smith, Lynch and Bill Bratton.

Mike Elkins of Rocky Mount won the Super Stock race for his 10th victory, followed by Richie Rader, David Stout, David Smith and Wayne Corpew.

In the Mini Stocks, Curtis Elwanger of Salem recorded his first FCS victory, followed by Carlton Clark, Travis Sharpe, Stacy Laprade and James Cox.

Jay Perry won the Pure Stocks, followed by Greg Tester, Tom Dooley, Doc Holiday and Danny Wickham.

In the Rookie race, Bobby Davis won, followed by Travis Yates, David Duncan, Scott Foley and Harlan Dalton.

Paul Milliner of Roanoke won the Any Car race.
