RADFORD - Radford Police are seeking information on a theft that took place between Friday night and Saturday afternoon at Bisset Park.
Police said three floodlights were stolen from the park. The lights, which illuminate the flagpole and the Vietnam War Memorial near picnic shelter No.1, cost about $300 each.
Several other petty larceny and vandalism acts have been reported at the memorial since it was built a few years ago.
Anyone who has any information on the thefts is asked to call Lt. Wayne Frye at 731-3627.
Be kind to your cave this week
BLACKSBURG - Gov. George Allen has proclaimed July 17-21 Virginia Cave Appreciation Week. With more than 3,000 caves, Virginia is among only five or six states that contains numerous caves.
The same week, the National Speleological Society holds its annual convention in Blacksburg. As many as 1,500 cavers and speleologists representing each state and several countries are expected to be at the convention. Attendees will participate in field trips to commercial caves in the vicinity and will scout surface features of the area's togography.
The Virginia Cave Board, an advisory function of the Department of Conservation and Recreation's natural heritage division, encourages people to explore and study caves during this honorary week.
The Virginia Museum of Natural History in Blacksburg will feature the exhibit ``Buried Treasures: Caves of the Virginians'' this week.
Steppin' Out bands to set up the mood
BLACKSBURG - Get in the mood for a great time at Steppin' Out with a look at some great bands that have performed at the event in the past. The 30-minute program will be featured on Blacksburg Public/Government Access Television WTOB Channel 2 Thursday, July 20 at 7 p.m. The program is locally produced by Lance Huff.
At 7:30 p.m., the outdoor concert series featuring the jazz combo 'Round Midnight will be broadcast. The program is locally produced by Anne Wohlcke-Priestley.
School Board hopefuls to speak
BLACKSBURG - The Montgomery County Mainstream Citizens presents the school board candidates at its July meeting Thursday. The candidates, recommended by the Montgomery County Education Association Political Action Committee, will present their views on issues related to the separation of church and state as guaranteed in the First Amendment. The candidates are Bernard Jortner, District B; Michael A. Smith, District E; James Klagge, District F and Wat Hopkins, District G.
The meeting will be in the basement of the Jewish Community Center on E. Roanoke Street at 7:30 p.m.
