ELLERTSON TOPS WOMEN'S AM MEDAL PLAY

Defending champion Amy Ellertson of Richmond threw caution to the wind Monday to fire a 4-over-par 75 and earn medalist honors at the 67th Virginia Women's Amateur golf championship by three shots in Hot Springs.

As champion, Ellertson didn't have to qualify for the tournament played on the Cascades course at The Homestead.

In second place, with a 78, was Lee Shirley of Salem. The only other player in the field of 86 to break 80 in hot, muggy conditions was Longwood's Karla Robertson, who finished with an 8-over-par 79. (Area scores in Scoreboard.)

The championship flight of 32 begins match play today. Two survivors will fight for the championship Friday.

In the Seniors championship, Chris Epperly produced three birdies and 15 pars on the nearby Homestead course to easily win the qualifying medal by three shots over two-time champion Ruth Ann Verell of Alexandria.

Peggy Woodard of Virginia Beach was third with 73 and Gay Stillwell of Charlottesville finished five shots back at 74.
