BEDFORD COUNTY MAN FOUND DEAD 50 FEET FROM BOAT RAMP

A group of men fishing on Smith Mountain Lake early Monday found the body of a 64-year-old Bedford County man who apparently drowned over the weekend while trying to beat the intense summer heat.

Jackson H. Sorrells, who lived in the Hardy Road Trailer Park, was found wearing a pair of shorts and his shoes, said Daryl Hatcher, a game warden with the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Four fishermen were pulling into the boat ramp off Hardy Road (Virginia 634) about 6:15 a.m. Monday when they saw his body floating about 50 feet from shore.

Sorrells' car was found parked nearby undisturbed, Hatcher said. No foul play is suspected.
