The good news is that DiscoveryWorks, the Radford children's museum that closed in June, has donated its leftover money - all of $244.02 - to the Fine Arts Center. Executive Director Michael Dowell said he will use the cash for educational programming for kids, a part of the arts center that has received less emphasis lately.
The bad news the Fine Arts Center is suffering from the same disease that did DiscoveryWorks in, Dowell says. As tough as it is to raise money, finding volunteers and participants is even more difficult. A lack of interest is what sounded the death knell for DiscoveryWorks.
Dowell said he could use help in a number of areas, including teaching, bookkeeping, publicity, and correspondence. He figures more participation will translate into more money.
"I believe that if more people are taking an active role in the arts center, the more money will come in."
It is ironic, he says, that the Fine Arts Center is better known
"We have a very good reputation across the state, and people here don't realize what a jewel they have."
