GRANDMA, GRANDPA - THE COLLEGE NEEDS YOUR ADVICE

Calling all grandparents! New River Community College seeks grandparents to serve on an advisory committee to plan a week of events for grandparents and their grandchildren to enjoy next summer.

The school is forming a volunteer group of grandparents to plan the 1996 program, "Bridge Building: Quality Time for Grandparents and their Grandchildren."

Prospective contestants for the Ms. Virginia Senior Citizen Pageant have until Aug. 1 to declare their intentions and pay the entry fee. The third annual pageant is set for Aug. 24-26 at a new location, Whitman Auditorium, Virginia Western Community College, Roanoke.

The $250 entry fee includes lodging, meals and incidentals.

Eligible seniors must be at least 55. Talbott has more details at 674-5534.

SENIOR GATHERINGS

The American Association of Retired Persons Radford chapter holds a potluck supper today, 5 p.m., at the Radford Senior Center, 27 First St. The Joy Makers entertain. For information or transportation, call John Jeuck, 382-7969, or Mary Jane Harmon, 731-3634.

Thursday, the Senior Discussion Group continues its series on the welfare system by asking the question, "If you were running the welfare system today, how you do it?" Conversation and coffee begin at 9:30 a.m. The program gets under way at 10 a.m. Joy Herbert has details at 961-1134.

The American Association of Retired Persons Narrows chapter 502 meets Friday, 12:30 p.m., at the Giles County Senior Center, 1320 Wenonah Ave., Pearisburg.

Johnny Barnett performs Tuesday, 7 p.m., in the gazebo, Bisset Park, Radford. Free. (In case of rain, the concert will be held in Shelter 1.) Blankets or lawn chairs recommended.

Flexible Fitness: The Arthritis Workout is Thursdays, 1 p.m.

The walking group meets in the Radford Recreation Department gym Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 a.m. Free. Sneakers only!

Seniors swim for free every day, 11-11:45 a.m., weather permitting, in the Pearisburg town pool.

During July, the swim therapy program meets Mondays and Thursdays. Transportation leaves the center at 1:15 p.m. for the Blacksburg Aquatic Center.

The nutrition program is Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday an 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Flexible Fitness: The Arthritis Workout meets Thursdays, 1-1:30 p.m.

Bible Study is Tuesdays, 1-2 p.m.

There's a cookie swap Tuesday, 3 p.m.

The Dine 'Round Club meets July 26, 12:30 p.m., at the Elk's Club, downtown Pulaski.

July 29, travel to Barter Theatre, Abingdon. Transportation leaves the center 9 a.m. with time for lunch buffet at the Martha Washington Inn and browsing at the Virginia Highlands Festival. It's $5 for the play, lunch and transportation.

Thursday is the deadline to register for the AARP "55 Alive" mature driver refresher class July 24-25, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. It's $8. Space is limited.

"Sleepless in Seattle" is the movie of the month July 31, noon. A small donation will defray the costs of movie rental and popcorn.

Friday, sail the Virginia Dare on Smith Mountain Lake. It's $31 for seniors, including transportation, lunch and cruise. No refunds!

Register now for "That Was Then, This Is Now," an intergenerational "exchange" program for seniors and youth, Monday, 10:30 a.m., at Circle Park. It's $1.

July 26 is "Mile High Sundae" day. It's $1 and registration is required.

SENIOR SHORTS

1995 Legacy Quilt Show: Applications are available starting Monday, Christiansburg Senior Center, 655 Montgomery St., and at Christiansburg Parks and Recreation, 95 College St. The show is open to all adults. The show is set for Sept. 16, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. - during the Wilderness Trail Festival - at the Christiansburg National Guard Armory.

Senior Athletes of Montgomery County: Donations of 100-percent cotton material are needed for a quilt fund-raising project. Material may be left at the Christiansburg Senior Center, 655 Montgomery St., Cambria.

Senior Poetry Contest: The entry dealine is July 31 for New River Community College's 17th annual poetry contest for seniors age 60 and older. To be eligible, poems must be original, fewer than 60 lines, and never before published, and participants may submit up to three.
