Other first-round winners on the Cascades course were four-time champion Jane Mack of Richmond, with a 3-and-1 decision over Roanoke's Dot Bolling; 1994 finalist Natalie Easterly of Richmond, with a 7-and-6 triumph over Barbara Hughes of Richmond, a two-time winner of the event; and Kathy Hull of Roanoke, who beat Anne Patrick of Richmond, another two-time champion, 1 up.
Other winners included Lee Shirley of Salem, who beat Barbara Howell of Roanoke 4 and 3; and Longwood golf coach Cindy Ho, a 7-and-6 winner over Jessica Lahr of Mount Vernon.
In the 38th annual Women's Senior Amateur championship, also played on The Homestead course, defending champion Audrey Najjum of Roanoke beat Mary Helen Rawls of Suffolk 1 up. Tournament medalist and 1994 finalist Chris Epperly also advanced, with a 4-and-3 victory over Juanita Milan of Dumphries.
Another former winner, Ruth Ann Veerell of Alexandria, produced a 3-and-1 triumph over Norma Lemon of Covington, but past champion Marie Winks of Forest fell to Loraine Houlahan of Alexandria 3 and 1.

K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke advanced to the round of 16 at the boys' 16-and-under National Clay Court tennis championships in Nashville, Tenn., with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over 10th-seeded Chris Porter of Canton, Ohio.
Hippensteel will play Derrick Nguyen today for a berth in the quarterfinals. Hippensteel and his partner, Philip Nguyen, dropped their first-round doubles match to Greg Royce and Kyle Kliegerman of New York 7-6, 6-4 late Monday night.
The Roanoke Stars under-17 boys' basketball team defeated Greater Boston 69-63 to move into the final 30 at the AAU national tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C. Roanoke lost its first game, 85-63 to Cincinnati on Sunday before rebounding with a 78-63 victory over Nebraska Gold on Monday.
Keath Hampton of William Fleming led the team with 18 points Monday. Mike Martin of Martinsville had 13 and Fleming's James Stokes added 11.
The team will play again at 10:30 a.m. today.
Curtis Shank scored with 15 minutes remaining to lift the Roanoke Star U-15 boys' soccer team to a 1-0 victory over SV Stuttgart in Stuttgart, Germany.
Wade Forte assisted on the goal, which gave the Stars a 3-3 record in a series of exhibition games leading to the Dana Cup tournament in Denmark. Goalie Danny Talmedge had three saves en route to the shutout.
SuperTruck fans may get a sneak preview of the Goody's 150 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Aug.14-15 when the NASCAR series holds a two-day open practice at Martinsville Speedway. Roanoke's Brandon LaCroix is in third place after shooting a 1-over-par 73 at the Bryan Park Junior Amateur golf tournament in Greensboro, N.C. LaCroix is one shot behind co-leaders Landon Smith and Lee Parks, both of Greensboro. The tournament concludes today.
