ELMHURST, Ill. - Keebler Co.'s British parent has put the cookie and cracker maker on the auction block, citing disappointing U.S. sales.
``We've been gaining share in the cookie and cracker business, but not fast enough for our parent company,'' Keebler spokesman Stuart Greenblatt said Tuesday from the unit's headquarters in the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst.
Keebler, the second-largest U.S. cookie and snack maker after RJR Nabisco, recorded revenues of $1.7 billion last year, down 3 percent from 1993.
``Keebler's planned level of market growth has not been achieved,'' United Biscuits Holdings PLC said in a statement.

GM recalls several models
DETROIT - General Motors Corp. on Tuesday recalled about 116,000 of its 1990-1993 Buick Riviera, Cadillac Eldorado and Oldsmobile Toronado models with shoulder belts that become stuck in the retractor.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported eight accidents and nine injuries related to the faulty belts. To fix them, dealers will install a snap-on button that will stop the belt from sliding in too far, GM said.
Also Tuesday, GM announced two other recalls:
About 90,000 of its 1994-1995 Chevrolet Caprice, Buick Roadmaster and Cadillac Fleetwood models for faulty accelerator pedals that may fail to return to idle position quickly enough.
GM said the pedal assemblies proved faulty in tests at below-freezing temperatures, but there were no reports of any problems in customers' vehicles.
About 13,000 replacement fuel tanks sold through GM's Service Parts Operation manufactured for 1975-1991 full-size C-K and R-V pickup trucks. The tanks may have one or more pairs of projection welds that may fracture in a collision, GM said.
No accidents or injuries related to the defective tanks have been reported, according to GM.
