With four months to go before the fall elections, Montgomery County candidates for sheriff are spending fairly heavily.
In neighboring Pulaski County, the candidates for sheriff and commonwealth's attorney report more modest spending during the first months of their campaigns.
In reports filed this week for June, Jerry Olinger and O.P. Ramsey Jr. lead the four Montgomery sheriff candidates in fund raising and spending.
Olinger, the Democratic nominee and an investigator-sergeant with the Virginia Tech Police Department, reported $949 in donations in June and $6,635 in loans. He has spent $3,650 and has $3,935 on hand.
(The candidates' loans and contributions may not equal their spending and remaining balance because the numbers have been rounded off and the reporting period covers only a part of the campaign season.)
Ramsey, captain of law enforcement for the Sheriff's Office and one of two independent candidates, reported $395 in donations and $4,000 in loans. He has spent $4,055 and has $341 on hand.
Doug Marrs, the Republican candidate and lieutenant of investigations for the Christiansburg Police Department, reported $830 in donations and $2,000 in loans for June. He has spent $1,859 and has a balance of $1,146.
Garnett Adkins, an independent candidate and a Radford City Sheriff's Office deputy, reported $350 in donations for June and expenditures of $676. He has $708 in his campaign coffers.
In the commonwealth's attorney's race, incumbent Phil Keith, the Democratic candidate, gave his campaign $2,000 in June and spent $894. He has about $724 on hand. In all, he has given his campaign $3,000, reports no donations and has spent $2,276.
Joey Showalter of Christiansburg, the Republican nominee and a partner in the Radford law firm of Stone, Harrison, Turk and Showalter, reports $1,500 raised from four contributors who gave more than $100 each, and $815 from 14 smaller donations.
Showalter spent $813 in June, and reports an ending balance of $1,502. He reports total contributions of $3,215 and total spending of just less than $1,576.
In Pulaski County, Norman Dowdy, the retired state trooper who is the Republican nominee for sheriff, has raised $2,140 from 26 contributors. He has spent $134 and has $2,006 left.
Ralph Dobbins, the Democratic incumbent, has raised $1,070 from 14 contributors and has spent $820. In all, he has raised $2,678, spent $1,183 and has just less than $1,500 in his campaign coffers.
Commonwealth's Attorney Everett Shockley, the Republican nominee, reports $125 in donations and expenses of $60. He loaned his campaign $500. He has $565 on hand.
Shockley's Democratic opponent, Byron Shankman, a Dublin lawyer, reports four donations totalling $275 in June. He spent $371. In all, he has raised $936 and spent $780. He reported a balance of $156.
