4 PEOPLE HURT AFTER STOPLIGHT REPORTEDLY RUN

Four people were injured Wednesday afternoon when a man reportedly ran a red light on U.S. 460 in Botetourt County.

Thomas Edward Whitt, 71, of Green Bay was headed toward Roanoke when he ran the stoplight at the intersection of Laymantown Road and U.S. 460 and hit another vehicle, according to state police.

Whitt and his wife, Elizabeth Susan Whitt, were taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Five hours after the accident, which occurred about 2:50 p.m., the Whitts still were in the emergency room being evaluated, according to the nursing supervisor on duty.

Teresa Rene Conner, 20, was entering the intersection from Laymantown Road when her car was hit on the left side by Whitt's car.

Conner and her brother, Maynard Eugene Conner Jr., both of Montvale, were taken to Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley and discharged.

Trooper G. Straub said a witness driving behind Whitt said Whitt did not try to stop at the intersection. Charges are pending in the case, Straub said.

All of the accident victims were wearing seat belts, Straub said.
