STATE AM SEMIS PIT '94 FINALISTS

Defending champion and tournament medalist Amy Ellertson of Richmond continued her quest for a second straight state Women's Amateur title with a 5-and-4 victory Wednesday over Peggy Freeman.

The second-round victory on The Homestead's Cascade course sets up a repeat of last year's finals match against Natalie Easterly, also of Richmond, in today's semifinals.

Easterly defeated Kathy Hull of Roanoke 3-and-2. Easterly lost to Ellertson 7-and-6 last year.

Other victors in the 67th annual tournament included Carla Roberson of Farmville who rolled in an 8-foot, downhill birdie putt on the 18th hole for a 1-up victory over Reston's Sarah Kayson.

Mimi Hoffman of Alexandria defeated Gail Hoerr of Charlottesville 4-and-2, and Lee Shirley of Salem beat Johannah Pattison of Wytheville 3-and-2.

Fran Hensley of Ridgeway, a former finalist, battled to a 1-up victory over Sherry Zaleski of Manassas, also a past runner-up. Longwood golf coach Cindo Ho posted a 3-and-2 victory over Sue Adams of Fairfax.

Jane Mack of Richmond and Charlaine Coetzee went 20 holes before Mack parred the final hole for a 1-up victory.

The eight semifinalists will play two rounds today, with the two finalist playing for the championship Friday.

In the 38th Women's Senior Amateur championship on the nearby Homestead course, Lorainne Houlahan of Alexandria beat defending champion and four-time victor Audrey Najjum of Roanoke 5-and-4. Other winners were Peggy Woodard of Virginia Beach, Chris Epperly and Jane Hawkins of Virginia Beach.

Brandon LaCroix won the overall title at the Bryan Park Junior Amateur golf tournament by firing a 4-under-par 68 in Greensboro, N.C.

LaCroix, who shot a 73 in Tuesday's first round, had an eagle and two birdies in the second round. He didn't bogey a hole on Wednesday in finishing with a two-day total of 141, the lowest score in any division.

LaCroix, a 14-year-old Roanoker, won the 14-15 age group by eight strokes.

His eagle came on the 480-yard No.14. His second shot, a 4-iron from about 200 yards away, stopped 15 feet from the pin. He dropped the putt from there on the way to posting a 3-under-par 33 on the back 9.
