RELIGION BRIEF

WILL TUTTLE, a California pianist and composer who has a background in meditation, will lead two days of services at Unity of Roanoke Valley, 3300 Green Ridge Road.

Tuttle, who has made three tapes of music that induces spiritual contemplation, will speak at the 9 and 11 a.m. services on Sunday and present a concert at 2 p.m. He will present a workshop, "The Healing Power of Music," on Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

A NEW CONGREGATION, Spirit of Life Full Gospel Baptist Church, currently is worshiping in the cafeteria of William Ruffner Magnet Middle School with the Rev. Antonio D. Thomas as pastor. Sunday worship begins at 10:30 a.m., and there is a Wednesday night prayer and Bible study program at 7.

A GOSPEL MUSIC CONCERT, featuring nationally traveled musicians The McKameys, The Greenes and Ernie Phillips is scheduled Friday at 7 p.m. at Cave Spring High School auditorium. Call 362-5943 for ticket information.

GERALD MCDERMOTT, professor of religion at Roanoke College and member of the Evangelical Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, will speak Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Ghent Grace Brethren Church, 1511 Maiden Lane S.W. At 10:30 a.m., his topic will be "Physical and Spiritual Healing," and at 6 p.m. the theme will be "The Silence of God."

THE WEST END CENTER, an ecumenical ministry serving inner-city children and youth in Southwest Roanoke, has added three summer staff members - Kacelia Ferrell, Lara Seek and Chris Tobin,.

In June the center worked with a record 100 children. The center soon will have a playground renovated by members of Salem Presbyterian Church, and its board is negotiating for purchase of more parking space.

ARNIE ALDRIDGE, a member of the Cotton Hill Road congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will speaker there July 30 at the 9 a.m. service.

Aldridge, a 1994 graduate of Cave Spring High School, will leave in August for Provo, Utah, to train for two years of mission service in Chile. His parents are Jim and Denise Aldridge of Roanoke County.

OAK GROVE CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN is sponsoring Wednesday night discussion groups in homes through Aug. 2. Each begins at 7 and is open to the community. Themes are "The Spiritual Journey of Robert E. Lee," "The Body of Christ" and "Homosexuality and the Church." Call 774-3214 in the mornings for more information and directions to the homes.

THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY of the founding of Locust Grove United Methodist Church in Salem will be observed Aug. 27 with the return of former pastors and a potluck picnic on the grounds at 3415 Locust Grove Lane. A music program is planned for the afternoon. Call 380-4303 for more information.

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, 226 S. Broad St. in Salem, will observe Men's Day on Sunday. Guest speaker at 11 a.m. will be the Rev. Leroy Hill, pastor of True Vine Baptist Northeast Missions Church in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Men's Chorus, directed by Gardner W. Smith, will provide music.

MISSIONS EMPHASIS DAY will be marked Sunday at West Main Street Church of Christ, 401 W. Main, in Salem. Preaching at the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services will be Mike Flinchum, a worker at Chiangmai Bible Institute in Thailand. At the 6 p.m. assembly, Ray Murphy, a Botetourt minister who is on the board of the Central India Christian Mission, will speak.

A NEW BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP, based on the principles of Eckankar, will begin Tuesday at 2400 Gate House Lane in Salem. For more information about the work, "The Dream Master," call 389-8043.

EVELYN CONNER, a Salem gospel singer, is now hostess to a new radio program, "Gospel Testimony Time," carried Thursdays at 2 p.m. on 3WR 910 AM.

SALEM BAPTIST YOUTH have returned from a week of summer mission service at Garden City, S.C., where they worked with vacationers through Garden City Chapel. The group had been scheduled to go to a Pennsylvania church for a service project but on 24 hours notice changed plans when floods canceled the original project.
