ROANOKERS WIN GOLD, OTHER MEDALS AT GAMES

Samantha Thompson and William Perrin returned from the 1995 Special Olympic World Games in New Haven, Conn., with several medals each.

Thompson won a gold medal in the 50-meter freestyle swim competition, a silver medal in the 25-meter freestyle swim competition and placed fifth for her age group in the 100-meter freestyle swim competition.

Perrin won a gold medal in the individual bowling competition, a silver medal in the team bowling competition and a bronze medal in the double bowling competition.

Thompson and Perrin were the only two athletes from the Roanoke Valley to participate in this year's Special Olympic World Games.

Roanokers place

in regional meet

BALTIMORE - Tiffany Mitchell and David Cabbler, both from Roanoke, had the best finishes among a 15-member Inner-City Athletic Association group at the AAU Region II track and field championships July 8-9.

Mitchell, 11, was fifth in the 400-meter in the girls' midget division with a time of one minute, 6.21 seconds. Cabbler, 14, was fifth in the triple jump in the boys' youth division with a distance of 34 feet, 4 inches.
