Ellertson, a 34-year-old real estate executive, lost one hole in the match, which ended on No.13. Ellertson chose to play the final five holes and finished with a 33-33-66, thought to be a women's record for the Cascades course at The Homestead.
``I was producing so well with my putter and finishing one of my finest rounds ever,'' she said. ``I just couldn't resist playing those last five holes.''
Ellertson one-putted eight greens.
``It was such a thrill to be playing so well,'' she said. ``I love this course.''
On the 10th, Ellertson's approach shot found a trap, and she was unable to get up and down to match Hensley's par-4 for her only loss. Ellertson parred the next two holes and birdied the 13th to end the match.
Hensley, whose game was not particularly sharp, said she doubted her best round could have beaten Ellertson.
``She did everything so well today,'' Hensley said. ``Her drives were long, she hit every green but one and her eight one-put greens killed me. A most remarkable golf day.''
The tournament was an amazing exhibition for Ellertson, who needed only 64 of a possible 90 holes to defeat five opponents. None of Ellertson's matches went past the 14th hole.
In the 38th Virginia Women's Senior golf championship, Chris Epperly of Virginia Beach defeated Lorainn Houlahan of Alexandria 4 and 3. The match ended on the 15th hole of the nearby Homestead course when Epperly matched Houlahan's par-5.
