CALE, Bertha Firestine, 82, of Marion, died Thursday, July 20, 1995, at her home in Marion. Survivors include her husband, Charles S. Cale, Marion; four sons, Clarence E. Cale, Fletcher L. Cale, Charles K. Cale, and James E. Cale, all of Marion; three daughters, Lillie Hayden and Ilene Blevins, both of Marion, Reba Call, Honaker, Va.; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 22, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Marion Funeral Chapel with the Rev. J. T. Osborne officiating. Burial will follow in Attoway Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at Barnett's Funeral Home.

CHESNUTT, Catherine C., 75, of Roanoke Co., died Wednesday, July 19, 1995. She was the widow of Leeland Chesnutt. Surviving are her daughter, Frances Farrell, Roanoke; son, James Chesnutt, Chicago, Ill.; grandchildren, Fred Farrell, Roanoke, Cathy Blomgren, New Jersey, Jennifer and James Chesnutt, Chicago, Ill., Lisa Goldberg, California; two great-grandchildren, Sarah and Rebecca Blomgren, New Jersey; one brother, Conrad Cultraro, New York. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's South Chapel. Graveside services will be held Monday, 10 a.m., at St. Andrew's Cemetery.

COMPTON, Zella Underwood, 72, of Salem, formerly of Floyd Co., passed away Thursday, July 20, 1995 in a Salem hospital. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Winston Poff, Copper Hill; one son and daughter-in-law, Doras and Marie Weddle, Roanoke; three sisters, Ruby Agnew, Ava Wells both of Floyd, Larma Harman, Martinsville; one brother, Gilbert Underwood, Bassett; a special sister-in-law, Rosetta Underwood, Roanoke; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 22, 1995 at 2 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd, with the Rev. Dale Bowman and the Rev. J. D. Harman officiating. GOAD, S. Reed, 93, of Hillsville, died Thursday, July 20, 1995, at Blue Ridge Highland Nursing Home, Galax. He was born October 28, 1901. He is survived by his wife, Arsie Rorrer Goad; daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Jerry Cock, Hillsville; granddaughter, Michelle Cock; several sisters-in-laws and several nieces and nephews. HANKLEY, Maude Landreth, 89, of Galax, died Thursday, July 20, 1995, at Shenandoah Nursing Home in Fishersville. She was born November 28, 1905 in Woodlawn, the daughter of Orville and Pauline Landreth. She was the wife of the late Charles Edward Hankley. She is survived by four daughters, Mary Lou DeHaven and husband, Erwin, of Gaithersburg, Md., Patty Milici and husband, Bob, of Charlottesville, Car olyn Hankley of Knoxville, Tenn., and Charlotte Shepherd and husband, Fred, of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister, Mary Landreth Boaz of Fullerton, Calif.; brother, Dante Landreth of San Diego, Calif; loving brother-in-law, Ben C. Hankley and wife, Ila, of Galax; devoted niece, Carol Landreth Meador of Salem; grandchildren, Carol DeHaven of Washington, D.C., Scott DeHaven and wife, Christy, of Fredericksburg, Pam Milici Treece and husband, Mack, of Prague, Czech Republic, Craig Milici and wife, Lucille, of Burke, Fred Shepherd of San Diego, Calif, and Greg Shepherd of Jacksonville, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Allyson and Matthew Treece, Alan Milici and Adrienne Collins. HARRUP, William Ralph, 85, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, July 20, 1995. Mr. Harrup was a former member of the Rotary Club for 36 years, was a member of First Baptist Church and the Henderson Sunday School Class and was a retired Manager of Western Union with 46 years service. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Pattie Mae (""Pat"") P. Harrup; his daughter, Katherine Harrup Wilkins, Charlottesville; two nieces; three nephews. Graveside services will be held in Evergreen Burial Park, Saturday, July 22, 1995 at 11 a.m. with Dr. Charles G. Fuller officiating. Oakey's Roanoke Chapel handling funeral arrangements.

JONES, Thurston D., 87, of Roanoke, died Thursday, July 20, 1995, at the Veterans Care Center. He was retired from the V.A. Hospital, Salem. Surviving are his wife, Julia D. Jones; a son, Dr. Jeffrey D. Jones, Dallas, Texas; a sister, Frances J. Agee, Roanoke; a special sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Crozier, Roanoke; and a number of nieces and nephews. LUMSDEN, Grace Alice, 83, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, July 19, 1995 at her home. She was born November 25, 1911 in Gordonsville and was raised in Pembroke.She was a daughter of the late Averette and Cary Bruce Lumsden. She was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Lumsden Fleshman, and her brother, Averette William Lumsden Jr. She graduated from Lynchburg College in 1934 and taught in the Pembroke Elelmentary Schools. In 1952, she moved to Lynchburg to make her home with her sister and brother-in-law. She was an active member of Memorial Christian Church. Survivors include on e nephew, Frank Mallory Bowler, Goodep one niece, Julia Mallory Hall, Martinsville; t hree cousins, Mary Alice Weaver, Pearisburg, Geraldine Preston McCall, Pembroke, Lorraine Scott, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and one sister-in-law, Julia Mallory Smith, Lynchburg. Graveside services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m in the Birchlawn Cemetery, pearisburg, Va., by the Rev. Virgil Knipp. A memorial service will be held at Memorial Christian Church on Sunday, July 30, 1995 at 4 p.m. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Diuguid Rivermont Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, the Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Plantation in Bookneal, or any children's fund of your choice.

MUNSON, Roberta Louise Ferguson, 69, of Penhook, died Thursday, July 20, 1995 at her residence. Born January 22, 1926 in Auxier, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the Rev. Buel Ferguson of Paintsville, KY. and the late Georgie Price Ferguson. She was married to Frederic (Fred) A. Munson, who predeceased her. She was a retired owner and founder of Smith Mountain Dock & Lodge. She was an active member of the Cool Branch Ladies Auxiliary, Top #504, Penhook, Smith Mountain Lake Garden Club, Martinsville Chapter of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Liberty Christian Church, Sandy Level. She is survived by two sons, Richard Munson and Mike Munson, both of Penhook; and one daughter, Ginger M. Roberson, Collinsville; two sisters, Blanche Hall and Hester Preston, both of Kentucky; and two granddaughters, Angela and Suzane Becker, both of Collinsville. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, July 24, 1995, at the Liberty Christian Church by Wayne Grinnell, Pastor. Interment will follow in Liberty Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times, will be at the residence on Rt. 1, Penhook. STABLE, Sallie Mullins, 80, of Narrows, died Wednesday, July 19, 1995. She was born at Roderfield, W.Va., on March 15, 1915, and was the daughter of the late James Henry and Lula Hare Mullins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Earl Stable; two children and two grandchildren. She was a member of the Church of Christ at Glen Lyn, Va., and is survived by a daughter, Carol S. Frazier of Narrows; two grandchildren, Sherry Lowe of Rich Creek, Chris Sanders of Narrows; a great-grandchild, Brandon Lowe of Rich Creek. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows, with Mike Lynn, Minister officiating. WILLIAMS, Johnny E., 46, of Route 1, Box 501, Manville Rd., Gate City, Va., died Thursday, July 20, 1995, at Holston Valley Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was a life long resident of Scott County, VA. He was a member of State Line Baptist Church and was very active in the Church's Bus Ministry. He had retired from the Scott County Virginia School Board where he was the Transportation Supervisor. Mr. Williams had also worked for Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes for 16 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Germany. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John and Rosa Benton Williams; and maternal grandmother, Sudie Blair Mann. Surviving are his wife, Patricia Blevins Williams, Gate City, Va.; two daughters, Rebecca Jane Williams and Leigha Alice Williams, of the home; two sons, Jonathan Edward Williams and Justin Loyd Williams of the home; parents, Harry E. and Eileen Mann Williams, Gate City, Va.; sister, Hope Reynolds, Wytheville, Va.; several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
