TRUCK OVERTURNS ON I-581

A pickup overturned in the median of Interstate 581 Friday, slowing late-afternoon traffic and sending the truck's driver to the hospital. The driver of another vehicle has been charged.

Traffic on Interstate 581 near the Peters Creek exit was slowed late Friday afternoon after an accident caused by a juvenile resulted in a pickup overturning.

State Trooper K. Kozar said a teen-ager was driving on the ramp to southbound I-581 when she swerved to avoid a car in front of her that had slowed or stopped before entering the highway.

The girl was looking over her shoulder to see if the way was clear to merge and came up too quickly on the vehicle in front of her, Kozar said. She swerved left into traffic to avoid the car, and the truck's driver swerved to miss her.

The driver lost control of the truck, which overturned in the median, Kozar said.

The truck's driver, Raymond Ray Peverall of Boones Mill, was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was discharged several hours later.

The girl, whose name was not released because of her age, has been charged with reckless driving.
