WESTVACO EXECUTIVES PROMOTED

JEFFREY M. JENSEN, production manager at Westvaco Corp.'s bleached board division mill in Covington, has been promoted to manager of the company's fine papers division mill in Wickliffe, Ky. At Westvaco's Covington operation, ABDUL G. CHAUDHRY will become manager of the recovery, pulp mill and power departments; and LON ROLLINSON will be manager of the paper mill department.

Jensen, who joined Westvaco in 1975, was promoted to paper mill superintendent in 1989 and was named production manager in 1994.

Chaudhry joined the company in 1969. He was pulp mill superintendent before being named manager of the pulp mill and recovery departments in 1994.

Rollinson joined the company in 1980. In 1993 he was named supervisor of No. 2 paper machine and in 1994 was promoted to paper mill superintendent in charge on Nos.1 and 2 paper machines.

ACCOUNTING

ELIZABETH A. DRUMMOND has joined Controllers on Call Inc. as vice president of operations. Drummond is a certified public accountant with five years of experience in private and public accounting. Controllers on Call is a Roanoke-based company providing management accounting services to small businesses.

BANKING

ROB HOAK has been promoted to executive vice president of First Union National Bank of Virginia. Hoak, previously a senior vice president, has been head of the middle market and corporate banking operations in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., since March 1994. He will retain that post in Roanoke. Hoak joined First Union in 1983 as a corporate banking officer in Hickory, N.C., and after several promotions, was First Union's city president in Savannah, Ga., from 1991 until joining the bank's Virginia operations in 1994.

Also at First Union, KELLY C. VRESCAK has been named assistant vice president at the bank's service center in Roanoke, where she formerly was operations officer. Vrescak joined the bank in 1987.

At Central Fidelity Bank Inc. in Roanoke, JOSEPH K. TATUM has been promoted to senior vice president. Tatum joined Central Fidelity in 1991 as a senior accounts manager for the commercial division of the Southwestern Region. Previously, he had been employed by Dominion Bank as vice president and commercial account manager.

COLLEGES and UNIVERSITIES

RUPERT CUTLER, executive director of Virginia's Explore Park near Roanoke, has been named to the Hospitality and Tourism Management Advisory Board at Virginia Tech.

FOOD SERVICE

BOBBY SIMMONS has joined The Jefferson Club in Roanoke as chef. Simmons has more than 15 years of experience, including five years at The Homestead resort in Hot Springs as sous chef.

GOVERNMENT

JOHN LAYMAN, Roanoke area claims agent with the Virginia Department of Veterans' Affairs, has been assigned the counties of Rockbridge and Alleghany in a realignment of service areas. As a state advocate, he assists veterans and their dependents to obtain VA benefits.

HEALTH CARE

JUDY CUNDIFF PHILO, director of health information management for Lewis-Gale Psychiatric Center in Salem, was recently installed as president-elect of the Southwest Virginia Association of Health Information Professionals.

INSURANCE

DON Z. FILSON, vice president of Thomas Rutherfoord Inc. in Roanoke, has been elected regional vice president and board member of the National Association of Surety Bond Producers. The association is an international organization of agencies and brokerages that specialize in providing corporate surety bonding and insurance programs to construction contractors.

MANUFACTURERS

BOB HUTCHISON and STEVE AUSTIN have been assigned additional product development responsibilities at Lees Carpets, a division of Burlington Industries. Hutchison, who has worked for Lees for more than 14 years, has been named vice president for product development for both commercial and residential carpets. He previously was responsible for product development for commercial carpets. Austin, who joined Lees 19 years ago, will remain director of product development services for commercial carpets and also will work in product development for residential carpets.

Both men are based at Lees' carpet manufacturing plant in Glasgow. ROY GUESS, senior vice president of design resources, has resigned from the company to accept another position within the industry.

MEDICINE

DR. SCOTT A. STRELOW has joined Tuck & Strelow Associates, providers of comprehensive eye are and surgery in Roanoke. Strelow comes from Andrews Air Force Base, where he was chief of cornea service. He also taught ophthalmology at Georgetown University and was assistant professor at the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine. Strelow is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a member of the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology, Society of Air Force Clinical Surgeons and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.

TELE-COMMUNICATIONS

CHRIS C. FOSTER was promoted to secretary-treasurer of R&B Communications replacing PATSY BULLOCK, who retired. Foster joined the company in 1984 and has been assistant secretary-treasurer of the diversified telecommunications company since 1987. Daleville-based R&B Communications operates Roanoke & Botetourt Telephone Co., the Beeper Co., R&B Cable, Telecom Systems and R&B Network.

UTILITIES

JOHN D'ORAZIO has been named director of marketing and new construction for Roanoke Gas Co. He will be responsible for new residential and commercial customers. D'Orazio has been superintendent of construction and operations for the past two years. Before that, he worked for Virginia Natural Gas in Norfolk and Baltimore Gas & Electric.

Roanoke Gas Co. distributes natural gas in the Roanoke Valley and Bluefield area and propane in the Roanoke Valley, Southwestern Virginia and southern West Virginia.
