ROANOKE STAR EARNS VICTORY IN GERMANY

Stuart Angel had the lone goal Saturday as the Roanoke Star under-15 boys' soccer team defeated Katernberg 1-0 in Essen, Germany.

Danny Talmedge preserved the shutout in goal, and Paul Wallace was credited with outstanding defense for the Star, which is 4-3 on its European tour.

The Star heads for Hjorring, Denmark, today to participate in the Dana Cup, a prestigious tournament that features 800 teams from 47 countries.

Al McCallister, Ted Cromer, Mike Fields and Mike Harrison combined to win the Brian Thomas Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament at Countryside. The group shot a 15-under-par 56 on the 6,018-yard course to win the $250 first prize.

Hal Johnson, Terry Murphy, Billy Miles and Albert Crowder finished two strokes back.

Both teams donated their winnings to the fund that provides a scholarship to a Glenvar High School senior each year. The fund honors the memory of a Glenvar student-athlete who was killed in an automobile accident last year.

James Stokes, a William Fleming High School standout, was an honorable-mention all-tournament selection at the 17-and-under AAU boys' basketball competition in Winston Salem, N.C. Stokes, playing for the Roanoke Stars, will be a senior in the fall.

Lighthouse, from Stone Mountain, Ga., scored 14 runs in the top of the seventh inning to upset No. 1 ranked Ritchey's Superior (Windsor Locks, Conn.) 36-29 Saturday at Municipal Field in the USSSA Major NIT Tournament.

The teams combined to hit 26 home runs.

Ritchey's will play at 8:30 a.m. today against Bell-Sunbelt (Tampa) in the winners bracket finals, also at Municipal Field. Bell-Sunbelt reached the championship round by beating Shen Valley (Bridgewater) 31-28. Bell-Sunbelt scored eight runs in the top of the seventh to overcome a Shen Valley team that tallied 19 home runs. The two will meet again at 10 a.m. in the championship game.

Losers bracket finals will be held at Moyer's Sports Complex at 8:30 a.m. Ritchey's Superior will play Riverside-Ram-Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) and Shen Valley will take on Hague (Columbus, Ohio).

Saturday's U.S. Interregional soccer match between the Roanoke Riverdawgs and the Columbia Heat was called at the 29:40 mark of the first half because of lightning. No make-up date has been scheduled.

The Riverdawgs' next game is Friday, against the Washington Mustangs in Washington at 7:30 p.m.
