Furrer, who most recently played for the Amsterdam Admirals in the World League of American Football, became a free agent when Denver elected not to renew his contract after the 1994 season.
Furrer, 27, was selected by Chicago in the fourth round of the 1992 NFL draft. He played in the final two games of the 1992 season, starting against Dallas in the last week.
Furrer, who was 9-of-23 for 89 yards against the Cowboys, was waived by Chicago on the final cut before the 1993 season. He was acquired by Phoenix, but never played in a regular-season game for the Cardinals.
In 1994, Furrer was picked up by the Broncos after Denver had released Shawn Moore, a former college rival at Virginia. It was the Broncos who made Furrer available to the World League, although they did not keep his rights.
Furrer, a backup for most of the season with Amsterdam, started and completed 32 of 64 passes for 324 yards, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion in a 26-22 loss to Frankfurt in the World Bowl.
Houston had been negotiating with former Washington Redskins quarterback Jay Schroeder, who apparently is now out of the picture. The Oilers' other quarterbacks are Chris Chandler, Bucky Richardson and No.1 draft pick Steve McNair.
