WHO PAYS FOR WHAT AND HOW

DOMICILIARY UNIT (Adult home)

Cost: $56 a day.

Forms of payment: private pay, state auxiliary grant, negotiated rate for residents who can't pay full rate but don't qualify for a state grant. Some residents receive a subsidy from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, based on income and assets.

Monthly spending allowance: $40-$60 a month, unless private pay, which is unrestricted.

ALZHEIMER'S UNIT

Cost: $101 a day for semi-private room.

Forms of payment: Residents automatically eligible for VA subsidy, which covers $35.37 of the daily cost. The remainder, $65.63, is covered by private pay, private insurance or Medicaid.

Monthly spending allowance: $30 if resident receives Medicaid. Amount is set by Virginia Department of Social Services. No allowance restriction for others.

NURSING HOME CARE UNIT

Cost: $96 a day.

Forms of payment: Residents automatically eligible for VA subsidy, which covers $35.37 of the daily cost. The remainder, $60.63, can be covered by Medicaid, private pay or private insurance.

Monthly spending allowance: $30 a day for Medicaid clients. No allowance restriction for others.

SKILLED CARE

Veterans must have had three-day acute hospital stay to be eligible for skilled care. For those who do, Medicare pays for 100 days of care - 100 percent of first 20 days, 80 percent from day 21 to day 100.

Cost: Medicare reimbursement rate.

Monthly spending allowance: No restriction.
