MAN CONVICTED IN HORSE-KILLING

A jury recommended a three-year prison sentence for a Scottsville man who shot and killed a Belgian draft horse.

Little Joe Cain Roach Jr., 24, was convicted Friday reckless handling of a firearm and hunting on posted property, both misdemeanors, and a felony count of shooting at an occupied dwelling.

In addition to the prison term, the Fluvanna County Circuit Court jury recommended that Roach be fined $7,500.

A single shot from Roach's rifle struck the 8-year-old horse, Big Foot, in December. The horse died minutes later.
