AVALANCHE ENDS SKID VS. INDIANS

The curse is over.

It took a 3-hour, 30-minute game, but the Salem Avalanche outslugged and outlasted the Kinston Indians 13-9 in Carolina League baseabll on Sunday night, snapping a 12-game losing streak to Kinston and a six-game streak overall.

Salem (15-13), which had not beaten the Indians since a 6-2 victory April 13, moved a game of first-place Kinston in the Southern Division. Salem's 13 runs were the most by the Avalanche this season, surpassing the 12 runs scored against Lynchburg on May 22.

After blowing leads of 2-0, 6-2 and 7-6, Salem took control with a four-run seventh inning. Edgard Velasquez, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored, led off with a single off Kinston reliever Rafael Mesa. Forry Wells hit into fielder's choice to force Velasquez and Brian Culp walked to put runners on first and second.

Nate Holdren broke a 7-7 tie with a single and Keith Grunewald followed with a sacrifice fly before John Giudice smacked a two-run homer to give Salem an 11-7 lead.

Salem tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the ninth on a two-out, two-run double by Chris Sexton off Maximo De La Rosa as the Avalanche made it 13-7.

Kinston (17-13) tacked on two runs in the ninth off Jason Dietrich on Einar Diaz's solo homer and Enrique Wilson's RBI single, but got no closer.

Curt Conley (4-1) picked up the victory, pitching three innings and giving up one run on one hit. Mesa (2-1) took the loss, giving up four runs in 2 1/3 innings of work.
