REDSKINS WORKOUTS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

The Washington Redskins begin their first full week of training camp today at Frostburg (Md.) State University. Workouts are open to the public through Aug. 9.

Practice times are 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. The Redskins and Pittsburgh Steelers will scrimmage at Frostburg State's 6,200-seat Bobcat Stadium on Saturday at noon. Tickets are sold out.

If you're driving from the Roanoke Valley to Frostburg, plan on a drive between 41/2 and 5 hours. The easiest route is about 270 miles, and all but about 18 of those are via four-lane highway.

From Roanoke, take I-81 to Exit 310 (just south of Winchester). Exit onto Virginia 37 north. From 37 north, take U.S. 522 north, crossing into West Virginia (through Berkeley Springs). At Hancock, Md., take I-68 west. The trip from Hancock to Frostburg is about 50 miles.

There are few hotels in Frostburg, but additional lodging is available in Cumberland (12 miles away) and LaVale.

The Redskins will leave Frostburg after the 9 a.m. practice on Aug.9 for a trip to Tennessee and an Aug.12 preseason game against Houston at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville. On Aug.10-11, both teams will hold workouts, open to the public, on the Maryville (Tenn.) College campus.

For more camp information, call the Redskins' offices at (703) 478-8900.
