HUMIDIFIERS COULD POSE DANGER

SHEBOYGAN FALLS, Wis. - Bemis Manufacturing Co. is recalling about 400,000 Waterwick humidifiers the company says could pose a fire hazard.

Switches on the humidifiers can overheat and catch fire if cleaning solutions are applied to electrical controls, the company said.

There have been five reports of humidifiers overheating, the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission said. The agency said it has received no reports of injuries.

Humidifiers affected are 10- to 12-gallon units. They have been sold since 1990 at hardware and home supply stores in the United States and Canada.

Tax returns

mean surplus

WASHINGTON - The federal government posted a budget surplus in June as quarterly tax returns streamed into the Treasury.

While revenues were up, reflecting healthy business profits and higher taxes on the affluent, expenses also increased, the Treasury said.

That's why last month's surplus stood at a smaller-than-expected $13.571 billion, down 8.6 percent from $14.850 billion a year earlier.

The reason for the smaller surplus was mainly technical. The government mailed Social Security, veterans benefits, and military salary checks for July on June 30 instead of July 1, which fell on a Saturday. The government doesn't mail benefit and paychecks on weekends.
