Ruling could put woman in Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. - A federal judge cleared the way for Shannon Faulkner to join The Citadel's all-male corps of cadets, ruling Monday that there is no time to consider an alternative program designed to keep her out.

The only way the state-supported military college can prevent her from becoming a cadet is to persuade a higher court to block her.

``We will explore all the options, and that includes the Supreme Court,'' said Citadel spokesman Terry Leedom.

Mail carrier fired in AIDS refusal

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A postal carrier who refused to deliver mail to a couple with AIDS has been fired after holding on to fears he could catch the virus from their metal mail slot and licked stamps.

``It's his own ignorance that lost him his job,'' said Pat Grounds, who with her husband, Fred, was snubbed by the carrier.

Tim Snodgrass, a 10-year mail carrier, refused to serve the couple after they moved into a home for people with AIDS in late June.The National Association of Letter Carriers is appealing the dismissal

Man charged in beheading of son

MORIARTY, N.M. - A man accused of hacking off his son's head beside a highway was brought shackled into court Monday, where a judge entered innocent pleas on his behalf to murder and other charges.

has been ``delusional'' during interviews with investigators, said Prosecutor Ron Lopez. ``He indicated he was trying to beat back the demons. He thought his child was the devil.''
