IN GILES, IT WILL BE 1 IF BY LAND, 4 IF BY LAND AND RIVER

Most tables and chairs require four legs. So does the Eighth Annual Giles County Road & River Rally.

The competition starts with a 12.4-mile bicycle ride to Pembroke. Then comes the first of two runs, a 3.8-mile jaunt. That's followed by an 8-mile canoe trip down the New River. And to top it all off, another run, this one is 1.8 miles.

The event starts 10 a.m. Aug. 5. at Pearisburg Magic Mart. A mandatory meeting for competitors is 9 a.m. at King Johnston Community Center.

Divisions in the event include solo, business, industry, over age 40, church, family, civic organization, public servants, open and high school.

Registration is $20 for individuals and $50 for teams through Friday. After that, the cost goes up to $30 and $60 respectively.

For information, call PAT MULDOON at 626-3373. The event is sponsored by Buckhead Financial and Citizens for Giles County.

SOFTBALL TOURNEY: A tradition is being started at Veterans Fields in Radford - the first WCHS men's open slow pitch softball tournament this weekend.

Plus there will be a home-run hitting contest Saturday night.

B/M (8-0) leads the Christiansburg Church Softball League. Abundant Life (6-2) took over sole possession of second place when St. Paul II (6-3) fell to rival St. Paul I (5-4).

GRIDDERS GET READY: Registration continues in Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Montgomery County for youth football. Those ages 9-13 (as of Nov. 1 and not in eighth grade) are eligible to participate. Players will be divided into lightweight and heavyweight teams based upon their age and weight.
