SALEM HOPES RALLY CONTINUES

The Salem Avalanche staged its comeback. Now it will have to wait until today to see where the rally will carry it.

After trailing the Prince William Cannons by three runs after five innings at Municipal Field, Salem tied the score in the Carolina League baseball game with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Then, with one out in the Prince William eighth, a torrential downpour halted play. The field became unplayable and the game was suspended until 6 p.m. today, when it will be finished before the scheduled nine-inning affair.

The Cannons took a 3-0 lead, thanks in large part to solo home runs by Magglio Ordonez in the third and Paul Gonzalez in the fifth.

Forry Wells started Salem's comeback with a solo home run to lead off the sixth. Colin Dixon tied the score with a two-run single with two out in the seventh.

Salem has lost seven of its past eight games, six of those by one run. The Avalanche started the night two games behind Southern Division-leading Kinston.

The scheduled pitchers for tonight's regular game are Prince William left-hander Scott Christman (3-2, 4.25 ERA) and Salem right-hander Matt Pool (6-6, 4.79).

NOTE: Right-hander Chris Stewart signed with the Colorado Rockies as a free agent and was activated by the Avalanche on Thursday.
