REPORTED EARNINGS

Ben Franklin Retail Stores Inc., Carol Stream, Ill., retailer with stores in the Roanoke Valley, reported a net loss of $1.5 million, equal to 28 cents per share, on sales of $89.3 million for its first quarter ended June 30, compared with a year-earlier net loss of $846,000, equal to 15 cents, on sales of $75.2 million.

Carmike Cinemas

Carmike Cinemas Inc., Columbus, Ga., operator of movie theaters in the Roanoke Valley, reported second-quarter net income of $4.2 million, or 37 cents per share, on revenues of $91.2 million, compared with year-earlier $1.6 million, or 20 cents per share, on revenues of $68.1 million. For six months, net income was $2.1 million, or 19 cents, on revenues of $155.1 million, compared with year-earlier $3.3 million, or 40 cents, on revenue of $135.5 million.

Chesapeake

Chesapeake Corp., Richmond-based forest products company with a Chesapeake Packaging Co. division in Roanoke, reported second-quarter net income of $18.5 million, or 77 cents per share, on sales of $315.1 million, compared with year-earlier $4.9 million, or 21 cents, on sales of $236.9 million. For six months, net income was $39.3 million, or $1.64, on sales of $606.2 million, compared with $6.9 million, or 30 cents, on sales of $448.9 million.
