PULASKI IS MOVING FORWARD ON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The committees that will put together the Pulaski Economic Development Board's program are through marking time, now that the town has hired an economic development director.

Some of the 30 board members originally appointed by Town Council early this year have stepped down because of other commitments, a move out of town or for other reasons. But council should be able to fill those positions at its meeting Tuesday and have the board up to full strength again.

Executive committee members Wednesday stressed the importance of the board's committees to put together their parts of the program for Barry Matherly, who will begin his position as economic development director in August. Matherly, who lives in Roanoke and plans to move to Pulaski, will be in town next week to start meeting people.

Chairwoman Sybil Atkinson said Matherly has resource connections at Virginia Tech and has been active on the New Century Council.

"That gives him even a wider range," she said. "We can't just be Pulaski in our little shell, and just stay right here and not worry about anything else." However, she said, Pulaski is taking the lead on the local level with municipalities working toward their own economic development.

"Once we get a program in place, priorities will be established and we'll see how far we can stretch the dollars," Vice Chairman Wayne Carpenter said.
